Freedom can be defined as a state of exemption from the power or control of another; liberty; exemption from slavery, servitude or confinement. Because Christ purchased us at a great price, we can trust that we have been exempted from the power of the enemy and from certain destruction. The Bible tells us that Christ has made us free and that freedom can be found where the Spirit of the Lord is. The Bible also tells us that knowing truth sets us free and Jesus, who is truth, promises a light yoke for those who come to Him.
The beginning to becoming free is to hear truth. The Bible says “and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32) We must first hear something to know it, and then once we know it, we have to believe it. Once we believe it, we are awakened and our eyes are opened. This is when our faith needs to become activated. This is when trusting in the truth that we know is key. Things can be overwhelming once our eyes are opened, but things also start to make so much more sense. Freedom starts within.
There are many different forms of bondage that we may face: addiction, depression, poverty, anger, guilt, and so much more. But Jesus says “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Jesus makes it clear that coming unto Him is like being freed from slavery. We must come to Him with all of our chains and shackles and allow Him to break them off. It is only through Him that we can find true freedom.
The Bible tells us “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2 Corinthians 3:17) True freedom is having the Spirit of the Lord within you. We are carrying freedom in us wherever we go with the Holy Spirit. Those who bear His Spirit are like lighthouses in the midst of a storm. We can trust that where His Spirit resides, we are safe and we will be brought to liberation.
We are made to be free. It is important to remember that God has called us to live lives of righteousness so that we can be light-filled examples to others. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1) God has called us to live lives free of bondage and to be beacons of light to others shining on the path to freedom. True freedom comes only from the Spirit of the Living God.
